Hawkins' House in Burkburnett

Home of Simon Peter Hawkins and his wife Sara Ann Hardin Hawkins.

Allegedly, the Hawkins House was built in 1882 by Simon Peter Hawkins, one of this area's earliest pioneers.  It is said that this home was built on the highest point in the Burkburnett area.  Standing in the front yard of the home, it offers an outstanding view of the country side from all directions.  On a clear day one can see for miles and stand mesmerized deep in thought of how it must have been, clean and untouched, to these early settlers who helped establish this part of Texas.

The house was built in stages, first it seems that it was originally a two room, two story structure with a fire place on the north side of the house.  A built in hand over hand ladder offered access to the attic, where it is said the Hawkins' boys slept.  A kitchen was built the length of the two room structure and even later two more rooms were added on the front with a porch as well.  The house is a "box framed" design, in that there are no studs, but has double walls.  In the 1940's hardwood floors were added in the first four rooms.  The ceilings are wooden boards, which add to the strength of the 126 year old house.

The Burkburnett Historical Society, a historical organization that believes that the history of Burkburnett is worth preserving owns the Hawkins House and believe that it serves as a teaching tool for young school children who tour the facility.  This organization offers guided tours of the area and the Hawkins' House.  It is furnished as closely as possible to its origin which includes clothing, furniture, bedding, handmade quilts, as well as cooking utensils which were used during the period.  A knowledgeable narrator explains and discusses life during the time frame in which the Hawkins' family lived in this residence.  In the springtime visitors can enjoy the sight of many cactus and irises of all colors wave in the breezes while the lilac bushes perfume the area with their delightful fragrances.
