Historic Burkburnett Offers A Glimpse Into The History Of The 1918 Texas Oil Boom

History

The Burkburnett community is fiercely proud of its beginnings.  It took a hard breed of individuals to settle this area.  The settlers were rugged, determined men and women who were bent on enduring the hardships that this land offered up in order to reap the benefits of settling here.  The history of North Texas and Southern Oklahoma would challenge the skills of the most talented of western novelists.

As early as 1912, oil was known as the elusive lady, a treasure just out of reach.  With Schmoker #1, Burkburnett's earliest well, a dream almost became a reality.  This particular well became the nucleus for zealous men to further their ambitions.  In July 1918, Fowler's Folly, Burkburnett's first gusher roared into life.  This well brought thousands of people to this area seeking their fortunes in the oil fields.  Many were disappointed.  Burkburnett became one of the most important oil producing fields in the nation and millionaires were made.

Descendants of some of the area's earliest pioneers still reside here.  Burkburnett is proud of its heritage.  It is equally proud of the way dauntless and daring people braved the hostile environment to make their homes here. Many books have been written about this powerful region and numerous historians have documented the lives and accomplishments of the early settlers and those who followed.

Burkburnett, Texas is a proud community, boasting churches of nearly every denomination and an exemplary school system.  Community spirit is high and progress and pride can be seen everywhere you look.
